One of the best parts of being a photographer in Northern Michigan is getting to meet families from all over who come here to relax, explore, and make memories. If you’re visiting Traverse City for a session—or turning your trip into a mini vacation—there’s so much to see and do while you’re here.

The area stretches in all directions, so depending on where you’re staying (west near Sleeping Bear or east toward Torch Lake and Elk Rapids), your itinerary might vary. Either way, here are some local favorites I always recommend—especially if you’re traveling with kids or want to experience the best of what this beautiful region has to offer.


Explore Downtown Traverse City

The heart of Traverse City! Downtown TC is full of charm and definitely worth spending time in—whether you're looking to eat, shop, or simply enjoy the lakefront.

Things to do:

  • Clinch Park Beach – A sandy, family-friendly beach right downtown with shallow water, public restrooms, a splash pad, and kayak rentals
  • Walk the Boardwalk – Stroll the paved paths along the waterfront, rent bikes, or catch a sunset over the bay
  • Shopping – Browse locally owned boutiques, bookstores, and gift shops all along Front Street
  • Other Stops – While many people love Moomers, Milk & Honey is my absolute favorite ice-cream in town. Cherry Republic always has cherry products which Traverse City is known for (they are so many samples!), The Rooftop at Hotel Indigo is nice for wine or beer and mingling with a view, and North Bar TC always has great live music in the evenings!

Favorite eats downtown:

  • The Cook’s House – Elevated farm-to-table dinner spot
  • Mama Lu’s – Street tacos + margaritas in a fun, modern space
  • Towne Plaza – Delicious brunch and cozy outdoor seating
  • The Little Fleet – A fun food truck park with a bar and live music
  • Red Ginger – Sushi and upscale Asian fusion, a reservation is almost always required
  • The Flying Noodle– Fresh and delicious pasta, but short on seating.

Downtown gets busy in summer, especially around dinner—consider making a reservation or visiting earlier in the day. Consider taking the TART trail around by bike and avoid some traffic!


Pick Your Own Fruit

During the summer months, Northern Michigan turns into fruit-picking heaven. Depending on the season, you’ll find strawberries, cherries, blueberries, and apples at so many different local farms. Some favorites are Buchan's for blueberries, Friske's for strawberries, and Rennie's for apples. Jacob's Farm on the west-side has pizza and a playground if you want an on-site activity after fruit picking! There are also plenty of roadside farm stands with fresh pies, jams, and local produce.

Tip: Cherry season usually peaks in early to mid-July—perfect for snacking or packing into your beach picnic.


Old Mission Peninsula

A classic Traverse City must-do. This scenic drive stretches north from downtown, lined with vineyards, orchards, and stunning lake views on both sides. The best view is just past Bonobo Winery on the left as you drive up—there’s a pull-off you don’t want to miss!

Where to Taste

Brys Estate – A gorgeous winery about halfway up. Beyond the tasting room, there’s a lavender farm and boutique tucked behind the vines—magical in mid-summer when the fields are purple and buzzing with bees.

Mari Vineyards – Mari is known for big reds and is in a beautiful castle like building that reminds me a little of Napa. The view is so good and you can sit out on the lawn and relax.

Chateau Grand Traverse – One of my favorites, the tasting price is reasonable and you get to keep the glass! This is one of my favorite views on the whole peninsula. Sometimes in summer they offer live music on their patio, and they have flatbreads as well for snacking.

Two Lads – My favorite for reds, plus it's nice to sit out on the lawn and take in the view.

Historic Stops

Old Mission General Store – Step back in time with creaky wood floors, shelves of nostalgic candy, homemade fudge, and old-fashioned sodas. It’s quirky, charming, and a perfect snack stop between tastings.

Old Mission School House Winery – Set inside a real 1891 schoolhouse (chalkboards and all!). They serve sweet wines and local craft beer, which is great if you’re with a mixed group.

Photo Moment

  • Old Mission Flowers – Pick your own bouquets in a dreamy wildflower field.
  • Old Mission Lighthouse – At the tip of the peninsula; perfect for a short hike and those golden-hour photos.

Where to Eat

  • Jolly Pumpkin – Cozy with lake views and comfort food.
  • Seven Hills – Tucked-away gem for pizza, sandwiches, and often live music on the lawn.
  • Bad Dog Deli – Great for grab-and-go sandwiches, perfect for a lighthouse picnic.
  • The Boathouse Restaurant – Elegant dining right on the water with gorgeous views—perfect for a special night out. Call ahead for reservations!


The Village at Grand Traverse Commons

This is one of the most unique places in Traverse City: a historic mental asylum turned into a collection of shops, restaurants, cafes, and walking trails.

You’ll find:

  • Handmade goods and boutique shopping
  • Great food and coffee
  • Gorgeous old architecture and cool history (there are even guided tours!)

This is a great way to spend a morning or rainy afternoon.


Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

No trip to Northern Michigan is complete without visiting this iconic stretch of lakeshore, about 30–45 minutes west of Traverse City. It’s full of family-friendly adventure.

Must-see spots:

  • Dune Climb – A must for kids (and grownups too!). It's sandy, fun, and a great way to burn off energy.
  • Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive – A 7-mile loop with stunning overlooks. Stop #9 offers a breathtaking panoramic view over Lake Michigan.

Explore nearby Empire:

  • Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitor Center – Helpful for maps, info, and clean restrooms
  • Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate – Handcrafted treats and hot cocoa—perfect post-hike!
  • Empire Beach – Views of the dunes + two playgrounds for the kids
  • Empire Bluff Trail – A short hike (1.5-mile roundtrip) with a major payoff: sweeping views of Lake Michigan. Kid-friendly (with supervision near the bluff).


Kayak the Crystal River

Located near Glen Arbor, the Crystal River is a shallow, winding river that’s perfect for beginners and families.

  • Rent kayaks or canoes from Crystal River Outfitters
  • Float through peaceful woods and wetlands
  • Spot deer, turtles, birds—maybe even an otter!
  • Two short portages and a fun tunnel called “shoot the tube”

Bonus: Explore downtown Glen Arbor afterward—grab ice cream, visit the shops, and stop at Cherry Republic and Public House for cherry products along with wine, jam, beer, and fun gifts.


Float the Platte River

Another favorite water adventure. The Platte River float is a relaxing 1.5–2 hour journey that ends right at Lake Michigan.

  • Bring your own tube or rent from Riverside Canoe Trips
  • Wear water shoes and bring a waterproof phone pouch
  • Scenic, shallow, and perfect for hot summer days with kids

Tip: Go early—this spot gets busy, especially on weekends.


Boat Day on Torch Lake

Want Caribbean-blue water without leaving Michigan? Torch Lake is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters and sandy-bottom swimming.

  • Rent a pontoon boat or jet ski for the day
  • Anchor at the Torch Lake Sandbar, where the water is shallow and ideal for swimming
  • Great for families, couples, or groups wanting a laid-back, sunshine-filled day

Rental tip: Boats book up fast in summer—reserve early!


Explore Elk Rapids

If you're staying northeast of Traverse City, Elk Rapids is a charming small town that’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

  • Public beach with a playground and restrooms
  • Cute shops
  • Favorite eats and drinks: The Dam Shop, Short's Pull Barn, and Happy Camper Coffee


Bonus Adventure: Petoskey Stone Hunting

These fossilized coral stones are a Northern Michigan treasure! Hunting for them is a fun, low-key activity for all ages—like a beach scavenger hunt with a beautiful souvenir at the end.

Best places to look:

  • Elk Rapids Beach
  • Lake Michigan shoreline
  • Beaches near Sleeping Bear Dunes
  • Christmas Cove Beach

Pro tip: They’re easiest to spot when wet—look near the water’s edge for the telltale honeycomb pattern!
