Welcoming a newborn is a deeply meaningful and fleeting season, and capturing those early days in a beautiful, natural way is something you’ll treasure for years to come. If you’ve already booked—or you’re just beginning to think about a session—you might be wondering what to expect next. After booking, I’ll send over a detailed guide that walks you through everything, but in the meantime, here are a few simple ways to prepare so your session feels relaxed and effortless.
If you’re feeling unsure about how everything will go, you’re not alone—most parents do. But don't worry! Think of me like a friend coming over that you don't have to impress. I am here to help and make this process stress-free. Overall my sessions are designed to feel slow, flexible, and baby-led.
What to Expect During Your Newborn Session
Newborn sessions are relaxed and natural, with a focus on connection and the quiet, in-between moments. We’ll document your baby just as they are, along with the way your family settles into this new season.
Depending on the package you selected, these sessions typically last around 1–2 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and breaks as needed. Nothing is rushed this way—your baby sets the pace.
Scheduling Your Session
When you’re expecting, it’s best to reach out during pregnancy so I can pencil you in around your due date. I take on a limited number of newborn sessions each month to allow flexibility for early or late arrivals.
To reserve your spot, you’ll sign a contract and pay a retainer that goes toward your session balance. Once your baby arrives, simply reach out and we’ll choose a date that works best.
Newborn sessions are ideally scheduled within the first 5–14 days, when babies tend to be sleepier and naturally curled.
That said, if you’re outside of that window, don’t worry—these sessions can still be incredibly meaningful and beautiful at any stage.
Preparing for the Session
You don’t need a perfectly styled home to capture your baby's first days—just a few areas with good natural light are more than enough! Here are some tips to keep in mind.
Prepare the Space: If your session will take place in your home, it’s a good idea to warm up the room to around 75-80°F. A cozy, warm space helps keep your baby comfortable and sleepy during the shoot.
Feed Your Baby: Feeding your baby just before the session begins ensures they’re calm and relaxed, which makes it easier to capture those sweet, sleepy moments.
Declutter the Area: Clear the space where we’ll be shooting to minimize distractions in the photos. A tidy space helps focus attention on your baby and family while keeping the overall aesthetic clean and beautiful.
Lighting
Natural light is ideal for newborn sessions, as it creates soft, airy, and timeless images. If the session is happening in your home, I’ll look for areas with plenty of natural light, such as by large windows. If the light is dim, I may use a gentle flash to brighten the room. For outdoor sessions, shaded areas work best to avoid harsh sunlight.
Props and Outfits
Props are completely optional. If there’s something meaningful you’d like to include—like a favorite blanket or a special piece—you’re always welcome to bring it or include it. Please let me know if there is a must have prop/outfit when I arrive!
I also bring a few simple, neutral items to add a bit of texture and warmth, but the focus will always remain on your baby and your connection as a family.
For newborns, I will usually wrap them in a blanket or put them in an open foot romper or onesie, as keeping things simple allows the images to feel timeless and true to this season.
What to Wear
What you wear plays a big role in how your photos feel. Soft, neutral tones and comfortable fabrics help create a clean, timeless look that keeps the focus on connection rather than clothing. That said, I still want you to look and feel like you, being comfortable and confident in your outfits will reflect in the final images.
- Parents – Light neutrals like cream, beige, soft gray, or muted pastels photograph beautifully. Flowy, natural fabrics like cotton or linen add to the relaxed feel. I do have a client closet with some dresses that are typically longer to allow for movement. If dresses aren't your thing, think of a cute matching set, or jeans and a light colored top.
- Siblings – Keep outfits simple and coordinated in similar tones. Soft textures and minimal patterns work best to maintain a cohesive, effortless look.
During the Session
The session will be relaxed, with breaks as needed for feeding, diaper changes, or soothing. We’ll capture a variety of shots, including photos of just the baby, as well as family portraits with everyone. I may incorporate natural poses with the baby, like swaddling or gently laying them in baskets or blankets. Don’t worry if your older children aren’t fully cooperative—they’re welcome to take breaks, and I’ll adapt to their energy to make sure everyone feels comfortable and involved.
After the Session
Once the session is complete, I’ll carefully select and edit the best images to create your gallery. These photos will capture the essence of this special time, with soft, timeless tones and natural compositions. When the gallery is ready, you’ll have access to view, download, and share your images. I also have access to professional labs, to help get your images off the hard drive and in your hands!
Final Thoughts
This is such a special time for your family, and I’m thrilled to be able to capture it for you. If you have any questions or need help with preparations, don’t hesitate to reach out. The most important thing is to relax, enjoy the moment, and let me handle the photography!
