Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the most beautiful spots in Michigan and a must-see for families visiting the area. With its sweeping dunes, clear blue water, and endless scenery, it’s easy to see why so many people return year after year. As a Traverse City photographer, this is one of my favorite places to document families—it’s naturally beautiful in a way that feels effortless, and I feel at ease every time I’m there.
If you’re planning a trip to the Traverse City area, this area is not only perfect for exploring—but also for documenting your time together in a meaningful way. Here are some of our favorite things to do as a family while you’re here:
1. Dune Climb
The Dune Climb is one of the most iconic activities in Sleeping Bear Dunes. This giant dune offers sweeping views of Lake Michigan and a real adventure for kids and adults alike. It’s a great place to let off some energy by running up and sliding down, but be prepared for a bit of a workout. Once you reach the top, the views are well worth the effort.
2. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center
Start your visit with a trip to the Visitor Center to learn more about the history and ecology of the area. The exhibits are interactive and engaging for kids, while also offering helpful insight into the dunes, wildlife, and local history. It’s also a great place to grab maps and plan out your time in the area.
3. Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor
Head to Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor, a charming local favorite offering all things cherry. From snacks and treats to souvenirs, kids will love exploring this fun, family-friendly shop. Don’t forget to try their cherry soda or ice cream—and their fries with cherry seasoning are a must.
4. River Club Mini Golf
While you’re in Glen Arbor, stop by River Club Mini Golf for some easy, classic family fun. The course is relaxed and scenic, making it a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.
5. The Old Coast Guard Station Museum
Explore the Old Coast Guard Station Museum in Glen Arbor, where kids can learn about the area’s maritime history. From shipwreck stories to rescue equipment, it’s an interesting stop for all ages.
6. Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate Shop
A stop at Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate is a must when you’re in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. This small, family-owned shop is tucked into the village of Empire and is known for its handcrafted chocolate made with locally sourced ingredients and thoughtful, small-batch methods.
It’s one of those places that feels like part of the experience—whether you’re grabbing a treat after a beach day or stopping in as you pass through town. From a mocha latte for parents to house-made fudgesicles and fun chocolate treats for the kids, it’s an easy favorite for all ages (and there’s even an ice cream shop next door if chocolate isn’t your thing), which makes it an easy stop everyone in the family will enjoy.
It’s just a really sweet spot to slow down for a bit—something about it just feels like summer here.
7. Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
Take a leisurely drive on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a 7.4-mile loop with incredible views of the dunes, Lake Michigan, and surrounding forest. There are several stops along the way with short trails and overlooks, including the Lake Michigan Overlook, which is especially breathtaking. These spots are even more beautiful in the evening, when the light softens and everything feels a little slower—perfect for a relaxed family session.
8. Empire Bluff Trail
For a family-friendly hike, head to the Empire Bluff Trail. This 1.5-mile trail leads to a beautiful overlook of Lake Michigan. It’s a short hike with a big payoff, making it a great option for families ready for a little adventure.
9. Empire Beach
Enjoy a relaxed afternoon at Empire Beach, where you’ll find clear water, sandy shoreline, and playgrounds for the kids. It’s an easy spot to spend a few hours, whether you’re swimming, picnicking, or just enjoying the view.
10. North Bar Lake
For something a little quieter, head to North Bar Lake. This shallow, warm lake is perfect for younger kids and offers a more peaceful, tucked-away feel. A short walk from the parking area leads you to calm water and beautiful surroundings.
11. Crystal River Kayak & Canoe Trips
This is one of our family’s favorites. Head to the Crystal River in Glen Arbor for a kayak or canoe trip. The water is shallow and gently flowing, making it ideal for families with younger kids. It’s a peaceful way to experience the area from a different perspective. Grab pizza next door at Mille's and sit by the river after your trip!
12. A Photo Session to Remember Your Trip
While you’re exploring all of these beautiful places, it’s also the perfect opportunity to document this season with your family. A photo session here doesn’t need to feel like a big production—it can be something simple and relaxed, woven into your time together.
Many families choose to plan a session during their trip, especially in spots like these where the scenery does so much of the work. Whether it’s an evening at the beach, a quiet walk along the dunes, or just letting your kids run and play, the goal is to capture it in a way that feels natural and true to your family.
It becomes more than just photos—it’s a way to hold onto what this time together actually felt like.
If you’re visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes and this feels like something you’d love to include in your trip, I’d be happy to help you plan a session that feels easy and natural.
